Carol Knapp's Green Parrot,1-13-04
I was on the jamcruise (Jan.2004) and I have to say if it wasn't for that strange
sequence of events that led me to be at the Green Parrot with DTB, I would
have missed out on one of the finest experiences of my life.
In the first place, the Green Parrot is the quintessential perfect bar. Its
old, mostly open to the warm breezes and street sounds on two sides, totally
eclectic in character, and small enough to feel like a private party. Its
the kind of place musicians aspire to get to play at sometime in their
career, not because of size or reputation, but because it's fulfulling in
its own right.
And while a musician may someday be fortunate enough to play at the Green
Parrot, NOBODY is allowed to dance on the bench in the back next to the
street window, which for liability reasons just isn't allowed. They employ a
security guy just to tell you that you have to jump down. All except for me,
that is! I have no idea how it came about, but the security guy was told by
the manager that I had to stand on the bench because I was shooting video.
And ok, I did shoot video (which you'll get if you want, once I have the
audio attached right), but there was no way I was going to stand on that
bench and not dance my heart out when dtb played! I had the absolute best
view & sound in the house... 20 feet from the band dead center... looking
out over the sea of happy people... turning around outside to watch the
white parrot on the shoulder of a friendly local... Gary and Mark smiling
nearby... surrounded and enfolded by the donna vibe at its highest. And they
did play!
Yeah, the jamcruise was a blast. But if they would have remembered their
documents, the Green Parrot would never have happened... life is strange,
life is good, life is all that it should be.
