David J. Grace's WNCW-Asheville Radio Interview
North Providence, Rhode Island 2-13-04
It was electric, full regalia, and was supposed to start at 1:00 but didn't start until really late. That was cool because it forced us to listen to the local radio there for a long time and it was REALLY great they had a hour of Old Time before and it was just mighty fine traveling up on through the mountains and tapping our feet. They cut into the studio during setup a few times by mistake and we got some pieces of a soundcheck (definitely the DJ's mistake) then like a half hour later it started. It was short and started focused on Jim Lauderdale and shifted focus to Donna the Buffalo. Jim (when trying to explain the cooperative effort between him and the band and their great unity) said that the band (when together) was like Jonna the Bufferdale to which you could hear the groans and snickers in the background. You all know what happens when Jim Lauderdale gets to talking (and it happened here. But Jeb got a few words in towards the end and the music was smoking especially by "These are Better Days". Mike's truck cranked out the tunes on that mountainside (great for 1 speaker). We had to pull over because we were afraid the station was going to drop out for good. We lost the station a few times as we drove up and over some mountains in our scenic route to Asheville from Greenville. We picked a great overlook on the end of one of the switchbacks high near the top of the ridge of mountains.
We got out and danced in the sunshine on the roadside. A bald eagle swooped down the mountain right in front of us as we watched in awe.
